Sketchbook Tour: My sketchbook in March 2020

My sketchbook tour will be a bit different this month as I have been doing a lot of painting at home since the lockdown, and my sketching activities in nature have stopped entirely. I’ve been recording a lot of bird sketching tutorials, some of them I’ve already shared on Youtube, some of them will be included in the free update of my bird drawing class. I’ve also explored painting with gouache a lot more lately, and have combined this with painting landscapes.

Here’s a video version of the sketchbook tour:

If you can’t see the video above, watch it here.

I’ll just show you what I’ve been up to this month, and I’ll link the videos I’ve already shared. Here are some tutorials of my bird sketches:

Sketching a puffin portait video

Sketching a kingfisher video

Here are outtakes from my smaller gouache sketchbook:

Painted from a photo of a vintage car I took in the neighborhood before the lockdown:

The view from my window, light and shadow on the houses:

Two quick and loose still live studies with fruit. Still lives are great for learning how light modulates objects.

I’ve been to Cornwall a few years ago and used some of my travel photos from the Cornwall Coast path for quick gouache paintings. I’ve shared this one on Youtube as a painting tutorial:

I’ve also filmed a similar version of this, it will come out soon:

And I’ve already shared this winter landscape last month, I repainted it on video, and it will also come out in the next weeks:

That’s essentially it for March. As I said, I’ve also done a lot of filming for the updated bird drawing class, and I’ll share more about that soon. Since a lot of client projects have been canceled or put on hold, I’ve reorganized my workload around the online classes, and on bringing you more painting tutorials.

Right now I’m browsing through my photos looking for interesting motifs that I can paint – although it’s a bit bittersweet, since none of us know when we will be able to travel again, I really like connecting the memories to the painting experience.

Hope you are all doing well – take care, friends!

P.S. I’m currently offering all my sketching classes at a reduced rate of $8. If you want to keep yourself occupied, learn sketching, and help me run this blog, give them a try.
