Winter walks – grebes, badger tracks, and a mill-wheel

It’s going to be another short post this week since I’m filming the new drawing class.

Above is a page put together from several of my winter walks:

  • I got to see a pair of great crested grebes who are changing into their nuptial plumage now – they are spectacular looking birds.
  • We followed badger tracks on one walk for quite a while, the front paws leave a round and short mark, the back paws a long and rather big one, almost like a child’s foot. The claws will also leave distinct marks.
  • I also enjoyed exploring several of the villages and small towns surrounding Kassel, a lot of them have beautiful medieval architecture and are next to small rivers that have beautiful hiking trails. In the town of Helsa we encountered a preserved mill-wheel – one of three mills they once had for milling grain, these days it generates electric power.

I’m going to dive into filming the drawing class again, thank you to everyone who suggested topics to include last week. It is going to be a very long class this time!

Grebe power!

  1. I so appreciate your love of nature and in helping us newbies out there to not be afraid to tackle drawing and painting what’s in our own backyard!

  3. I love all your artwork and colors and sketching and encouragement! So fun! You ask for ideas for perhaps something new to draw / paint and ideas, ~~~ How about some little farm scenes? Cute barns or sheds, a cow or two, chickens, maybe someone doing chores? Birds hopping around for tidbits? I live in central USA, (Ks). Love farm animals, grew up on a dairy farm with all the animals. I was Grandma’s helper. 🙂

    • That sounds lovely, Shon! I’ll see what I can do about farm scenes. I often see sheep and goats in the areas that I come across here, they’re “the small man’s cow” as a popular saying goes. And lots of people have chickens these days.
