Folk Tale Landscapes – Autumn Fields (#3)

ftl3 yt

Here’s my next video from my landscape sketching series about folk tale landscapes.

Today I have another autumn scene. I like the very calm atmosphere of this particular landscape, to me it had a very idyllic feel and I tried to reflect that in the color choices. I used a lot of warm color like yellow ochre and green gold.
This sketch was done in watercolor with a slightly more detailed pencil sketch underneath. I struggled a bit with the hot-pressed paper, but this is due to my lack of skills and not because of the paper. Actually I liked the smooth paper a lot because you get nice clean lines for your drawing.

Hope you enjoy it!

A bit of background info about this project:
In the Folk Tale Landscapes series, I’m looking for landscapes that could be the background for local legends and folk tales. I’m not looking to illustrate any of the stories themselves, I’m just interested in the mood and atmosphere behind these stories and I’m looking for ways to transport this in a landscape sketch.

For more info about this painting series (and about my background), read on here and here.
I started researching and creating these paintings last year and the project still continuing as I’m exploring new interesting places. Current restrictions have slowed the process a bit, but I like the thought of having an ongoing project in the back of my mind.

  1. Julia I love this sketch. While you chose a brighter palette for this landscape it is still filled with mystery and intrigue. What is going on in those buildings? What is lurking out of sight waiting to break the tranquility of the scene. I can hear the brothers Grimm layering a folk tale over this scene. In addition I really appreciate your showing your technique and talking about your thinking in doing this sketch. Your efforts give me some direction and inspiration for my own sketchbook. Danke Schön

    1. Thank you Patrick! Yes, often the most mysterious stories hide in sunlight and idyllic postcard landscapes.
