Every time I post one of these gouache landscape painting tutorials, I want to tell you about the personal project I recently started that’s connected with these landscape paintings, and why it’s really a project that I have been doing for over ten years, and what’s my special connection to the places I’m painting. But it’s such a long story, and I don’t want to bore you since you are mainly here for some nature sketching. So I keep writing and adding to that post that I hope I will share soon – hopefully before the year is over.
Essentially I’m in the middle of an expedition with these paintings, and even though they’re only gouache sketches, I hope I can come closer to something that I’ve wanted to express artistically for quite some years. I know this sounds really vague – it is.
Enough of that for now, today I have an autumn forest in gouache for you. I’ve painted this a few weeks ago when the autumn leaves were really colorful and radiant, and I wanted to catch that effect with the brush. What also interested me about this scene was the way the light fell onto the trees and brought them forward.
I hope you will enjoy this landscape painting tutorial.

P.S. I’m also working on the mushroom sketching class right now. I know I announced it last week as a “quick mini class”, and I thought I would be done in three or four days (how insane of me to assume that), but I couldn’t stop myself and have so much material – I basically painted mushroom the entire last week and it’s more like a regular length class with almost two hours of tutorials. Hopefully it will be finished and ready for you at the end of the week. 🙂
P.P.S. If you want to know more about my landscape painting project, let me know. I’ve been thinking about a way to share this for quite some time, and now that I’ve started these sketches maybe it’s of interest for some of you.
Here’s the reference photo I painted from:
Lovely scene! I learn so much from watching you paint.
Thank you Kerry, that’s good to hear and I’m glad you get something out of my videos!
I am interested in your landscape painting story. It helps to know HOW people think! I know how much we ALL appreciate your time spent on sharing your art. Thank you.
Thank you Jo, that’s reassuring. I’m definitely very grateful and appreciate it a lot that people are willing to spend time on this blog! Now I will have to think of a way to edit the story about my project to a consumable length! 😉
Yes, I would love to hear more about your process and the drive behind your landscape journey. I love hearing about how other artist came to where they are in their creativity. It helps me articulate my own evolving journey.
Thank you Kathleen, I really do appreciate it. I’m probably concerned to unnerve people with boring stories about myself that bring no real insight. But the way you put it gives me a new perspective, that’s very valuable!
I loved the tutorial. Would it be possible for you to post your reference photo? It’s helpful for the drawing. Thank you!
Done! I’ve added it above. 🙂
Lovely autumn painting, Julia. You really brought your photograph to life with the beautiful colors you used in the painting. I could watch you paint all day! You have a lovely relaxed process that is so instructive to watch and learn from. Thank you so much.
Thank you so much, I am thrilled to discovered you and all the great advice, it’s added a new dimension to my life
Lovely painting and great referencephoto – thanks for sharing! I would love to hear more about your landscape journey, as I’m on one myself…
