Announcement: Sketching Fundamentals is open for enrollment

sklsh21 cover

Just a quick announcement for those of you who are interested in a basic drawing course:

I’m currently offering my foundational drawing course called “Sketching Fundamentals“. It comes in two different versions – as a self-directed course (you can start right away and go through the class at your own pace), or as a guided course over 8 weeks with assignments and individual feedback. This version of the course is only open a few times a year – and soon I’ll start another run-through.

This course is basically all I know about drawing, and how you can fundamentally build your drawing skills through learning the right techniques and regular practice.

The guided course will start on September 25 2023.
Over 8-weeks there will be weekly structured assignments and individual feedback from me. If you prefer to learn on your own and at your own pace, there’s also a self-directed version without assignments/feedback (you can start learning immediately in this version).
For students who’ve bought the self-directed course in the past and want to join the feedback group this time around, this is possible and of course you don’t need to pay the full price again, but just the difference – contact me via email so I can set you up.

No matter which version you purchase, the course is yours to keep and there is no time limit for the files – you keep access to the videos and can watch them as often as you like, and even download them to your device – the only aspect that’s limited in the feedback version are the 8 weeks of feedback. But even after that, you can go through the course again, or explore lessons you haven’t gone through yet.

I’ve put this class together in a way that I would have liked when I learned drawing – it’s a foundational drawing class with a focus on nature topics that covers a variety of drawing techniques, concepts like perspective and foreshortening, how to apply shadows and texture.

Drawing is the very core of almost any artistic technique, whether it’s nature journaling, travel sketching, painting, or illustration and design. For me, focusing on basic drawing skills again was what made journaling and field sketching so much more rewarding – when you don’t fight with your skills, but simply react to what you see, for me this is where creative expression can happen.

I’ve seen great results from the student groups in the course over the last year. If you’re looking to get a good foundation to your drawing skills, this might be just be course for you.

I’ve shared two lessons from the course on Youtube (links are below) so that you can get an impression of what the course will be like, and you can watch a preview video with a lot of scenes from the course on the sign-up page.

The next run-through of the course with feedback will start on Monday, September 25 2023 (and end on November 19 2023) and enrollment is now open.

Here are two free lessons from the course:
How to start a sketch with different drawing methods
How to create three-dimensional realistic drawings

  1. Hi Julia. I have just discovered you on-line and feel really inspired by your work. I am interested in purchasing an on-line course but see that these are quoted in US dollars. I am UK based so wonder how I would set about purchasing a course in sterling. Many thanks, Sally Mitchell.

    1. Hi Sally, thanks for your interest and welcome to my blog! I know, the prices are all in US dollars, that’s because the platform I offer the courses on is based in the US (I’m in the EU myself, so I know the problem). Actually the currency will be converted when you make your purchase, I’m not sure if you can see it early in the checkout process, but your card or Paypal purchase will be in your local currency, in your case sterling. I hope this helps, let me know if I can do anything to make this easier for you. 🙂
