Landscape Sketching Fundamentals FAQ

Yes. You don’t need to know anything about landscape sketching to take this course, and it’s been created with beginners in mind. Of course, it will help to have a basic understanding of drawing and watercolor techniques, but it’s not required.

Basic sketching tools will be sufficient: Pencil or another drawing tool, a watercolor palette, and a sketchbook (or loose paper). You can bring any other media you like (like colored pencils, markers,…) but that’s optional.

It doesn’t matter if you have different materials than me, this is not a course about creating something in the same way as me, but about learning how to sketch landscapes with what you have and like to use. So don’t worry too much about your tools, they will probably be fine!

The video lessons themselves run over 8 hours, so the course is packed full. I know this can be a huge time commitment. I have structured the material into 6 chapters or 6 weeks – but you can of course take your own time and take breaks. You will need 1-1.5 hours for each chapter to watch the videos, and then another 1-2 hours to do the exercises and practice the concepts.

This course will give you a structured path for learning landscape sketching, with all important concepts building on each other chapter by chapter. It has all of the knowledge and tips that I wish I had when I started with landscape sketching, so it’s hopefully much more helpful than trying to figure out landscapes by watching random tutorials. 

I certainly hope so. But of course it depends on how much time and work you can dedicate to practicing.
I’ve tried to do all the heavy lifting of organizing concepts and knowledge into lessons that are easy to follow and exercises that will help you build your skills – but of course you’ll have to show up and actually sketch and paint to ingrain this into your art practice. 

All lessons are pre-recorded and you don’t need to show up for any live streams, events or Zoom calls. You can watch the lessons without any pressure at any time.

In the feedback version, you will get weekly emails with exercises and assignments that you can work through in your own pace. Again, no time zone management and live stream stress necessary.

There will be a feedback version of the course starting on 15 October 2026, during which I will give you weekly assignments and you can get personal written feedback from me.

If you don’t feel ready for this, the self-directed course will give you a strong foundation and has many tips to evaluate your own work and learn from your sketches. You can always take the self-directed course first and then upgrade to the feedback version later in case I offer it again.

Please note I can not extend or change the dates for the feedback phase since I too have a schedule. It’s very likely I will offer the feedback class again in the future, and hopefully it will work out then. :-)

It’s simple: there will be no live streams, zoom calls or time-sensitive live events you will need to attend.

All the material will be there in the lesson area for you to work through bit by bit.
You will get weekly emails from me, with exercises and assignments. You work through those, and send in your work. Then you get detailed written feedback by me. This is the “live” component.

This is the way I’ve taught many students in my feedback courses, and so far it’s worked really well and stress-free for everyone. By sending in your work (and adding a bit of text about it) you automatically reflect the process, and my written feedback will be there for you to come back to in case you want to revisit it. I usually respond within one or two days, so you can incorporate my feedback into the next assignment.

I know it’s common to have a class room and live events and streams that can create a “community feel”, but I noticed that can tend to be a bit stressful for students from different time zones. Plus I think enjoying a community experience works much better with in-person workshops anyway. So in my online feedback courses I concentrate on the thing that most students find valuable: structured, uninterrupted learning and feedback by the instructor. Our feedback emails are basically a one-on-one session, but without the technical and time zone hassle.
