Painting white clouds is surprisingly easy with watercolor – you just paint around them with blue paint, let that dry and add a few cloud shadows as a second step. Today I have a short outtake for you from my cloud sketching course that shows the process in detail.
Depending on your time and the level of detail you want to include, you can easily adapt this method and just add one layer or several more layers of cloud shadows. You will only need to adjust the amount of paint a bit. The important factor here is letting each layer dry – that way you’ll get nice soft edges, but the colors don’t run into each other.
Here’s the video lesson with the cloud painting tutorial:

I am JUST looking into ‘learning’ to DO art. This is my first time leaving my email on an art site.
Welcome Anne and thanks for your comment! If you have any questons or would like to learn anything specific, I’m happy to help!
Hi Julia, I have just finished your latest online course on painting clouds and skies in watercolour. I have been unwell for several months and unable to paint. Your course has proved to be an excellent way back into the joy of watercolour work, getting to know how paint behaves and the fun of mixing colours.
The varied demonstrations are well constructed and taught, really encouraging you to have a go. I am pleased with what I have been able to produce and feel ready to embrace again this wonderful hobby.
Thank you for sharing your skills and experience.
