Sketching a hare in watercolor (video)

Today I show how I’m sketching a hare in watercolor. This video was requested by one of my readers – I love getting in touch with all of you and learning more about what you would like to see. So if you ever have a certain topic you want to learn more about, or if there’s a certain animal, bird, or anything else that you’d like me to sketch, then let me know and I’ll put it on my list.

Sketching mammals is fun because you get to do the fur – in this case, I used Schmincke Maroon Brown, a granulating pigment (a variation of PBr7), that gives the fur a nice texture without me having to do a lot with the brush on the first layers. When painting fur I always like to think more about painting a pelt, instead of single hairs. It also helps to have areas that show less detail when you’re sketching hair. Our eyes will fill in the rest, and the animal will look less shockfrosted and wiry that way.
Towards the end, I also work with white gouache to add a few highlights around the face of the hare.
